OceanX Hackathon Mayotte 2025

In September 2025 we had the opportunity to return to the incredible R/V OceanXplorer for an unforgettable hackathon journey across the Indian ocean from Mayotte to Singapore. Continuing the work we began during the inaugural OceanX hackathon earlier in the year, we once again collaborated with ocean scientists and other leading artists, designers, and thinkers to help bring the important mission of learning about and preserving our oceans to the world.

We developed a special plugin for Unreal Engine that takes the data from a depth sensing camera and converts it into a series of collision mesh objects, allowing interactions with realistic fluid dynamics and other visual effects without the need for skeletal tracking, believed to be the first plugin of it’s kind. We also worked on getting interactive content onto a wide variety of unique displays such as LED fans and multiple configurations of projection surfaces.

We will be forever grateful for the chance to spend time amongst some of the brightest minds in their respective fields who became more than just friends and colleagues during the course of the 3 weeks we spent together.
